Bloody Caesar

In the past it has been known as the Smirnoff Smiler, the Gravel Gertie and the Imperial Clam Digger but the national drink of Canada is now and forever undoubtedly named the Bloody Caesar.

The fundamental difference from the original Bloody Mary is the substitution of the plain old tomato with Mott’s Clamato juice, a commercial product made from tomato juice flavoured with spices, clam broth and MSG.

A superior alternative to Mott’s, if you can find it, is Walter Craft Caesar Mix, named after Walter Chell, the inventor of the cocktail. It is a premium artisan product using all-natural ingredients including the juice of ocean-friendly clams from the North Atlantic. Of course it is Canadian too.

Mix it up as you would your chosen Bloody Mary variant but with Clamato. Bacon vodka can really take it to new heights. To the bottom of the glass, if you are bold enough, add a few clams or a couple of anchovy-stuffed olives.
